Is it Kosher to talk about other bands on this forum?
In any case, I have been getting a stady fix of this band for the past couple of weeks, and although I have been a fan since childhood, it's only now that I realize how grossly underappreciated this band really is. I listen to songs like "Apeman" and "Love Me Till The Sun Shines" and I marvel at what a damnable sin it is that they don't get more of a nod in modern times.
There should be Kinks Kover Bands popping up all over the place, and instead all we get is the occasional "You Really Got Me" on the radio. How is it that something so good can go so unnoticed in my generation?

Yes, this is the place on the Forum where anything goes! (Well, almost anything, lol.)
The Kinks are very kool in my book. Criminally under-appreciated and with one of the greatest rock songwriters in Ray Davies. They have a very rich & extensive catalog of both raucous rockers and introspective musings. Although I just followed them from a respectful distance through much of their career, reading Ray's book 'X-Ray' really got me deeper into the band and I recommend it... along with a great 2 cd set called "To The Bone" which combines live unplugged & full-band versions of both classics & obscurities.
I often read that many newer bands claim them as an influence, but maybe the material is just a little too 'intelligent', if you will, for the average pop fan. Ray certainly didn't stick exclusively to the boy-loves-girl formula, that's for sure! Plus their viewpoint is admittedly "quintessentially English" to quote Pete Townsend, who also claims them as a major influence.
I saw the Kinks live at Cleveland's Music Hall in 1993 on the Phobia tour, a great show... I had close seats but they were right in front of the PA stack - the kick drum was so loud & boomy, I seriously thought it was gonna throw off my heart rhythm and give me a heart attack so I had to keep taking breaks from the show, LOL...

Ditto on 'To The Bone'! One of my fave albums to put on when looking for something to rock out to while @ home. I bought that one just on a lark the day it came out...I stil haven't gotten around to reading 'X-Ray' yet, but, it's definitely on my list!
Yet another one of those bands that is just way under-rated.
And, yeah, I think their 'British-ness' prolly tends to throw off the 'average' American fan of music...however, me being the Anglo-phile that I am, they're perfect! ;D
(getting out 'To The Bone' now)

My old band played "Set Me Free"....that was a fun song and people seemed to like it. But, other than that and a few others, I'm not all that familiar with the Kinks. I was so unfamiliar in fact that when our one guitarist brought the song in as a suggestion to play, I was surprised that it wasn't the Beatles--I remembered the song from car rides with my parents while listening to "Oldies 104.3", but never knew who played it. Yep....there's my "down a peg" as a rocker for the year
