...just wondered if there were any other prog-heads here (besides Eroc & myself). Been listening to the new Transatlantic album, 'The Whirlwind since Friday. Doesn't sound like these guys haven't played together in almost 10 years! One 77+ minute song & another 4 originals & 4 covers (including Genesis' 'The Return of The Giant Hogweed' & Procol Harum's 'A Salty Dog'!). I haven't had a chance to check out the 'Making Of' DVD yet (prolly will get 'round to that tonite after the football game) or Neal Morse's new triple live set 'So Many Roads' (but, I *DO* have a 4 hour roadtrip this weekend...think that'll require bustin' out the "new" Grateful Dead release of the complete Winterland 1977 box, too)
Also, been absorbing Agents Of Mercy...this one's been out for a while, and I've had it since before it's release, but, just now have been gettin' 'round to *REALLY* hearing it. Good stuff!
So...anyway...back to prog bliss... ;D

And did you say a 77+ song WOW!

I've heard about half of the Winterland recordings...there's some real gems there for sure! I've been on a Dead kick for a while, and while `77 was a great year, I've been really checking out `74 and `84/85. Some truly electrifying stuff. www.archive.org has got some amazing recordings, and I just love the price! I was raised on Prog...I love what went on during the heyday, but your reminding me that I'm stuck there and need to get updated!

I have been a big prog fan for about 35 years! My favorites these days are IQ, Pendragon, Steve Hackett, Pallas, Magic Pie, Porcupine Tree, The Strawbs, and on and on. Gabriel era Genesis will always be my very favorite unless we are putting Pink Floyd in with the mix.

Porcupine Tree is a great band with a great drummer. Love their last album.

*LOVE* *LOVE* *LOVE* Genesis, (I carry 8 cd's worth of them w/ me in my car @ all times)...and great to hear IQ get some props! Love the 'Dark Matter' album...I still do "Red Dust Shadow" @ my solo gigs once in a while. King Crimson is an obvious one, too. Along w/ Yes, Dream Theater, and The Flower Kings.
Any Gong fans?

King Crimson is one of my favorites as well--leading into Adrian Belew and others. I don't know if they are considered Progressive Rock, but I'm a fan of Pelican. If you are in a mood for absolutely no vocals, Pelican is worth a listen. They describe themselves as "aggressive with pop sensibilities".

Yes would have to be my favorite... also love Genesis, and Spock's Beard/Neal Morse & Transatlantic, along with a plethora of others. Just recently started listening to Porcupine Tree... I was originally turned off by them with all the constant comparisons to Pink Floyd, but got over that & am starting to check them out some more. E

I didn't even mention Yes, 'cause I figured that was an obvious one!
I used to have some early Porcupine Tree, (an internet friend from Europe made me 2 CD's worth as an introduction), and they were *very* Floyd influenced, obviously. The last few things I've heard by them didn't seem to bear hardly any resemblence to the early stuff I used to have...I really should get back on the bandwagon...

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that when they canceled their concert tour due to an illness in the band (like vocalist Jon Anderson almost dying), you decided not to like them anymore because of that?

I got four words for any potential Yes fans. Tales from Topographic Oceans.

I know a *lot* of folks that wrote 'em off after they canceled that tour, (that Eroc & I had tickets to see in Columbus...dammit!), but, not because they canceled due to Jon's illness; because they just reshceduled and went out w/ a fill in vocalist.
And, for any potential Yes fans, go do this:
1) The Yes Album 2) Fragile 3) Close The Edge
(their 3rd thru 5th albums)
Then, I'd jump into Tales, Relayer, & Going For The One. And, for anyone that gave up on 'em in the 90's, I would *HIGHLY* recommend Talk & The Ladder.
(Unless, you're like, a hardcore prog freak...in that case, just go straight to Tales From Topograpic Oceans & Relayer)
Off to my gig now...and I'm *so* rockin' some Yes on the way now.
Thanks! ;D

Man now i feel bad, i did not know it was an illness in the band, but i thought they canceled it for other purposes...

No wonder I get along so well with this band.
It's going to take me weeks to get through all the recommendations in this thread. LOVE IT!
